Just to lay arguments in favour: Attachments can show previews (depending on file type), making them more comfortable to work with in many situations. The links open a separate page for the preview while attachments do so right there in the email page. The download button is also immediately accessible.
At the very worst, I hope maybe there should be an option for both alternatives? Though I'm not sure if that's asking for too much.
